Writer-director Im Sang-soo examines two halves of a nearly severed marriage in this grimly observant 2003 drama from South Korea. The husband (Hwang Jeong-min), a prominent attorney, divides his time between a high-profile war crimes prosecution and intense sex with a beautiful but casual mistress; meanwhile his wife (Moon So-ri), a lithe dance instructor, becomes increasingly involved with a horny teenager who spies on her in the studio. The couple are linked only by their young son and their responsibility to the husband’s dying father, though the latter’s empty relationship with his own wife casts an unwelcome light on the younger couple’s fraying union. This is harsh and sometimes shocking, but its treatment of the emotional differences between men and women is admirably cool and precise.
