Chicago Reader review:
The characters in this 1972 allegorical comedy drama, set in Egypt just
before the Six Day War, deliberately invoke movie cliches with their
courtship behavior and adroit manipulation of cigarettes. Obsessively
composed shots subvert realism by being marvels of technique even as
they advance the story of a young policeman, the adopted son of a
military official, who learns his biological father is a legendary
activist.
