Capital Celluloid 2021 — Day 208: Sun Dec 12

The Demon (Nomura, 1978): BFI Southbank, NFT2, 2.50pm

This 35mm presentation is part of the Japan season at BFI Southbank. Full details here. This screening will be introduced by season co-programmer Alexander Jacoby and the film will be shown again on December 19th (more information here).

BFI introduction:
Known for his stylish thrillers, director Yoshitarô Nomura here turns his hand to less generic material in this powerful, discomforting and harrowing account of child abuse. Although he had initially been reluctant to accept the role, Ken Ogata gives an extraordinary central performance, which allows us to understand, if not to sympathise, with a man whose actions are frighteningly believable.

Here (and above) is the opening of the movie.
