Kachenjungha (Ray, 1962): BFI Southbank, NFT1, 8.50pm
This 35mm presentation (also being screened on August 9th) is part of the Satyajit Ray season at BFI Southbank (details here).
BFI introduction:
A delightful ensemble cast play a family vacationing in Darjeeling, at a popular hill station and resort. Chhabi Biswas’ overbearing patriarch fails to see that his older daughter is in a troubled marriage and that the younger one is resisting her tiresome suitor. Ray’s first film in colour and unfolding in linear real-time, it combines intimate exchanges with larger family scenes.
Here (and above) is an extract.
