Chicago Reader review:
The eternal feminine, circa 1957, in the person of an amoral young woman
(Brigitte Bardot) who plows her way through a succession of
men—innocent Jean-Louis Trintignant, wealthy Curt Jurgens, misogynist
Christian Marquand. The first feature of director Roger Vadim, this was
an inspiring example to the young French critics who would soon emerge
as the New Wave; produced cheaply and independently, it pointed to a way
around the closed-off system of production that was then the French
cinema. Today it has turned largely to camp, though Bardot remains a
startlingly frank erotic presence.
