Maclovia (Fernandez, 1948): BFI Southbank, NFT2, 6.15pm

This 35mm presentation, which also screens on July 15th, is part of the Mexican Cinema season at BFI Southbank. Full details here.

BFI Southbank introduction:
Emilio Fernández and cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa sought to make films that felt uniquely Mexican in their style and expression of national themes – something that’s beautifully realised in this visually breathtaking romance set on Janítzio island, amid Mexico’s indigenous population. Armendáriz plays a poor fisherman whose love for the beautiful Maclovia (Félix) is rejected by her father, and tested by the arrival of a soldier.

Here (and above) are some extracts from the film.
