The tone, style, and point of view seem to change almost from shot to shot, but I don’t know what else I expected from this monster production (1978), in many ways the definitive corporate film. Between them, director Richard Donner and his five screenwriters contribute a lot of ideas, and some of them are good; the flying lesson/love scene between Superman (Christopher Reeve) and Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) is well nigh irresistible. The film is best when it takes itself seriously, worst when it takes the easy way out in giggly camp—as it does, finally and fatally, when Lex Luthor enters the action; Gene Hackman plays the arch-villain like a hairdresser left over from a TV skit. Marlon Brando is in it somewhere, as are Ned Beatty, Jackie Cooper, Glenn Ford, and Valerie Perrine.
