Under the Shadow (Anvari, 2016): BFI Southbank, NFT2, 8.40pm
This film, also screening on November 29th, is part of the In Dreams are Monsters season at BFI Southbank. Full details here.
BFI introduction: Tehran, 1988. When her husband leaves to serve in the Iran-Iraq War, Sideh and young daughter Dorsa are left alone in their apartment. As the threat of Iraqi air raids loom closer, Dorsa’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, leading Shideh to believe they are the target of an evil djinn. Arguably one of this century’s most frightening films, Babak Anvari’s remarkable debut deftly juxtaposes the fantastical threat of the supernatural with the everyday oppression of a woman living under Sharia law. Michael Blyth
