Chicago Reader review:
Luis Buñuel’s 1970 masterwork, adapted from a novel by Benito Perez
Galdos. Catherine Deneuve is a young woman unhappy with the constraints
of turn-of-the-century Spanish society; her mild revolt is rewarded by
an amputated leg. Buñuel conjures with Freudian imagery, outrageous
humor, and a quiet, lyrical camera style to create one of his most
complex and complete works, a film that continues to disturb and
transfix.
