A Diary for Timothy (Jennings, 1945): BFI Southbank, NFT2, 8.40pm
This film, part of The Art of the Essay Film season, is screening in a double-bill with Handsworth Songs. Details here.
Here is the BFI Southbank introduction: Text by EM Forster, images by Humphrey Jennings: this classic of British
cinema reflects on life in the immediate aftermath of WWII, adopting as
its focus the eponymous young boy, born on the fifth anniversary of the
start of the war, who represents hope for the future for a nation still
coming to terms with death and destruction on a massive scale. As ever
with Jennings, the fluid interplay of images, sounds and narration
bespeaks a consummate cinematic intelligence.
