Thunder in the City (Gering, 1937): BFI Southbank, NFT3, 6.20pm
This 35mm screening is part of the Projecting the Archive strand at NFI Southbank. The movie will be introduced by Jo Botting, BFI Curator.
BFI introduction:
When a brash advertising man arrives from the US, his methods take the
Brits by storm. But success soon turns to disaster. Importing Little
Caesar himself was a great way to inject some pizzazz to British cinema,
but here Robinson is cast as a different kind of gangster: a pushy
salesman who comes to England to acquire some good old British dignity.
His aristocratic relatives are on hand to help, and comedy ensues from
his bemused reactions to their strange customs. Director Gering and a
trio of top-rung US writers give the film a Hollywood slickness, with
continental glamour supplied by Luli Deste.
